Abstract: This one-time 1-hour webinar is open to interpreters of all domains and language pairs and will focus on scenarios that occur when interpreting in private sector settings. It will highlight what is considered ethical behavior and what protocols should be followed when encountering these situations. We will also discuss the current state of the profession.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to identify and analyze key factors that make a situation ethically problematic for an interpreter.
  • Attendees will be able to distinguish between ethical and unethical behavior in problematic situations in private sector settings such as medical appointments and depositions.
  • Attendees will be able to cite and articulate standards and protocols that justify ethical behavior for an interpreter.

About the Presenter:

Angie Birchfield has been a Spanish interpreter since 1991 and she became court certified in 1999. Since then she has been working as an independent contractor interpreter for the Superior Courts of California in Los Angeles, Ventura, Bakersfield, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. She has also worked as a freelance interpreter in the private sector which included over the phone interpretation as well as video remote interpreting. In 2005 she founded ABinterpreting, an interpreting agency that covers civil depositions.

She also spent 10 years working as an investigator for automobile insurance companies. She investigated fraudulent auto accidents and slip n falls.

In 2007 she became a CIMCE provider teaching topics on Expert Testimony of Drug Labs, Automotive, Child Dependency, Juvenile Crimes, Standards and Protocol in the Private Sector, Immigration and Workers Compensation.

Angie Birchfied is well known as an advocate for the Interpreting Community and is responsible for the authoring of AB2370, SB1160 and SB1150. She was Unit Chair of the Interpreters Guild of America until August 2019.  She continues to work on issues that affect the interpreting profession by trying to collaborate with the courts, government agencies, and fellow interpreters and to find reasonable solutions.
